Heat loss or gain can occur through any element of the building; wall, floor and roof/ceiling by the following three primary mechanisms.

Conduction
Convection
Radiation.

Factors affecting insulation effectiveness
In addition, three secondary mechanisms can influence the heat loss/gain by affecting insulation effectiveness. They are

Air Infiltration
Air Intrusion
Moisture Accumulation.

R-value, the traditional measure of an insulation's effectiveness measures only "Conduction".
"SPF" effectively prevents or blocks all six heat transfer methods.
